Ultra narrow band radio technology

Sigfox uses only 200kHz of the publicly available and unlicensed bands to exchange radio messages over the air. Sigfox uses Ultra Narrow Band (UNB) modulation technology. Each message is 100 Hz wide and transferred at 100 or 600 bits per second data rate depending on the region.

This is what enables the sigfox base stations to communicate over extremely long distances without being impacted by the noise. The device emits a message on a random frequency and sends 2 replicas on different frequencies and time, which is called “time and frequency diversity” or also called “frequency hopping”.Through the use of UNB modulation a single Sigfox base station is able to treat millions of messages per day.

An uplink message has a maximum 12-bytes payload. This is perfect to transfer sensor data, the status of an event or alert, GPS coordinates or application data. The downlink of 8 bytes is enough for triggering an action or managing the device settings remotely.

Ultra low power

The long battery lifetime with Sigfox is amongst others explained by the fact that no pairing with the network is required. This means that no synchronization messages are exchanged between the object and the base station before transmitting the data. This is a big advantage compared to other technologies which all include those additional steps. Also the idle consumption is very low, often a few nanoamperes, which makes it almost negligible. The high energy efficiency is further enabled through the use of semiconductor chips, produced by Sigfox partners, consuming from 10mA to 50mA in transmission (depending on the partner of chip used).

Security by default

Sigfox technology presents unique anti-jamming capabilities due to UNB intrinsic ruggedness coupled with spatial diversity of the base stations. UNB is extremely robust in an environment with other signals, including spread spectrum signals. However, spread spectrum networks are affected by UNB signals. Ultra Narrow Band is therefore the best choice to operate in the public industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band.  

This high resilience to interference is key to operate efficiently in the public ISM band.Based on its expertise and its partnerships, Sigfox has applied security by design principles in all
the definition steps of its protocol and in the development of its infrastructure. Furthermore, Sigfox is applying security-by- default principles in all the components it offers to Sigfox users, device manufacturers and end-customers.

Complementary network

Sigfox is complementary to Bluetooth, GSM 2G/3G/4G, Wifi and even NB-IOT / LTE-M. By combining other connectivity solutions with Sigfox, business cases and user experience are drastically improved.
